Clothes

I just love buying clothes for my children. It’s one of the perks of motherhood. I’m serious, file it up there with those wet kisses they give you and the way you feel whenever they say, “I love you.” I love buying my son those t-shirts with the smart-ass sayings.
“You’re Looking at a Legend”, “I Do My Own Stunts”, “Genius”, “Blame My Sister”, “Don’t You Wish I Had An Off Button”, “Smartest Kid on the Planet”, “Good Things Come in Small Packages”, “Economics Major”…I could go on and on. He dresses himself every day and whenever I see him come out of his room wearing one of those shirts, I have to smile. They fit his personality so well. Plus he’s got the caps to go with whatever color he’s wearing.

My daughter is the perfect little shop-a-holic. Everytime we’re in the store and I hear her say, “Oooh, look at this! It’s so cute!” I get a flash of her in twenty years at Saks wearing a white linen pants suit and Monolos instructing the personal shopper to go ahead and start a dressing room because she’s moving in for the next two to four hours. I just hope she has a good job to counteract the shopping sprees. The strange thing is, she’s always been a good shopper. I’m talking day trips to the mall with her when she was five months old and she’d just sit in the stroller and look at the clothes around her as if she was considering them! No crying, no fussing, and when she got older, she never played in the middle of the clothes racks like most kids. She’d just stand beside us and look at the wares, and try on the shoes (her favorite part). You’ve got to love that! Now, at six, she shops for herself. She sees something she likes, she finds her size, makes sure it has an adjustable waist (She’s so skinny! Did I mention the linen pants suit will probably be a size zero?)

So now, we go shopping and we’re recognized by the clerks in Gap, Old Navy, Children’s Place, and Nautica. I don’t really know if we’re doing the right thing here, raising two clothes horses that have more shoes than most adults…and don’t get me started on my daughter’s purses. My justification is that the kids always look so cute! I mean, my hubbie and I both grew up shopping at discount stores for discount clothes and you’re supposed to do better for your kids!
